Book Review: Dendo

おはようございます!

今日は伝道と言う本についてレヴィウーしたかったです。

Yeah. I majored in Japanese, so any chance I can get to use it, I take it.

Today, I wanted to take some time to review a book called Dendo. It's different than any other book that I've reviewed—not because it's a graphic novel and not because it's non-fiction. But because it's overtly religious.

Dendo is by a friend of mine, Brittany Olsen (or Long shimai, as I knew her) and she wrote it while in Japan at the same time my family and I were there. I belong to the Mormon church, and it's common for young people (and old people, sometimes) to serve missions to proselyte and teach about the message of the church. Dendo is her mission journal in comic-book form. And it's awesome.

The book gives readers an inside view of the life and times of a missionary—the successes, trials, fears, frustrations and failures. I was amazed at how strongly the emotions came through in the pages and how she was able to show not only her time as a missionary, but also her overall experience in Japan. It's an amazing place, and you really get a feel for the awe she has for the area, despite the fact that she didn't get to see as much of it as if she was living there as a student or a professional.

There's not much else to say... It's awesome.

Pros
Heartfelt
Heartwarming
Passionate
Funny
Emotional
Great art

Cons
Not fun if you don't like religious messages

Overall, I'd give Dendo 4.7/5. You can get through it quickly because it's fun to read, but it's also easy to put down because of the format. That being said, it's definitely worth taking a look at because it's entertaining. Plain and simple.

You can get more autobiographical comics of hers at

Thanks for wreading!
