Finished!

NaNoWriMo is over! (at least in my time zone...)

To those of you who finished: Congratulations! You did something that most people could only dream of!

To those of you who didn't do as well as you'd like: Congratulations! You did something most people could only dream of!

Now, you may be asking yourself why I said the same thing to both groups of people. It's simply this: as writers, we're imaginative people. It's in our nature. Sure, we work our asses off to come up with a good, compelling story that keeps people engaged while moving along in a fun, unique direction. Most people can't do that. Although some people strive to do it, we're the people who actually took the time and energy to try. And whether or not we succeeded in what we were hoping, we still got work done.

I'm proud of you. You all showed that you were willing to commit to sitting and writing for a month and smash your brains out through your fingertips. Those fingers have brought characters and events to life that will never be forgotten, even if those pages end  up somewhere in a drawer or in your computer's hard drive forever.

You accomplished the unattainable. You are a novelist. You may not feel like one, but I think Mur Lafferty said it best on her I Should be Writing podcast: "You're an author. It doesn't matter whether you're published or not; if you've sat at your keyboard and tried to tie characters and plot together into something entertaining, you're an author." She may not have said it in exactly that way, but that's basically how it goes.

You did it. Congratulations!

Thanks for wreading. And in this case, writing.

Jeff
